Rosenthal’s Studio Line is about one thing: design. Phillip Rosenthal established the Studio Line (German=studio linie) in 1961.

Some of the world's most honored painters, sculptors, architects and designers have contributed to it. The result is a collection that is not intended for the mass market, but rather for those who seek out the extraordinary and, in Philip Rosenthal's words,

"for those who do not wish to be dictated to."

Design: MASSIMILIANO ALAJMO and Rosenthal

Originally conceived for affluent diners, (Alajmo is a chef/restaurateur with three Michelin stars) this ergonomic service has become popular for home entertaining as well. Platters and bowls have little wells for sauces, and the pasta plate (left) has a depression for winding noodles around the prongs of your fork. Click here to see the entire range.

Design: ROBIN PLATT

Robin Platt, born in 1962, is one of the best representatives of new British design.

Following his studies at the London College of Furniture he founded his own designer studio in the London district of Kensington together with the architect Cairn Young. The innovative designer duo has created the collections “Spirit”, “Table-Wear” and the service form “Yono” for the Rosenthal studio-line.

Suomi

Scandinavian design, showing clean flowing lines based upon a circle and a square combined. Inspired by pebbles that are polished smooth by a flow of water over time.

Contrasting with the porcelain on the teapot, sauceboat and casserole are metal handles.

A modern design classic, combining form and artistry.

Walter Gropius Design WALTER GROPIUS

Cupola
Bellini has taken basic geometric forms and fused them together in an intriguing and practical tableware composition.

Demonstrated perhaps best in the coffeepot — a cone, a triangle, a hemisphere and a semi-circle brought together to form a functional and aesthetically pleasing piece.

Contrasting against the hard shapes of the range are the ingenious handles on the cups which curl their way around the cup almost organically.

Dorothy HafnerDesign
DOROTHY HAFNER
Born in 1952 in Woodbridge, Connecticut, Dorothy Hafner studied plastic art at Skidmore College, New York. The city has been a constant source of inspiration to her, and she has lived and worked in it ever since. She is one of the most prominent of the avant-garde representatives of the new ceramics scene.

Hafner's works stand out by virtue of the manner in which they synthesise shape and decorative design. She obtains a unity of design, the radical nature of which reflects the pulse of our time.

Moon

Moon is a prototype of what Jasper Morrison means by the quest for 'no-design': shapes which are matter of fact and which uncompromisingly sacrifice any unnecessary effects.

Jasper Morrison
Design JASPER MORRISON
Born in London in 1959, studied at the Kingston Polytechnic Design School. Works in many international museums. Designing for Rosenthal since 1995.
Morrison's creations, skilfully reduced to essentials, never overtly demand attention. Despite their individuality, they seem somehow familiar, as if they have always been around.

Yono

The Yono shape is sensual and creates a new aesthetic. Each piece is designed for a variety of purposes, revising the definition of what each piece of tableware should be used for.

Creating an atmosphere and defining what 'modern' is, this shape is one for today.

Designers
Design CAIRN YOUNG & ROBIN PLATT
British design team representing the best of the London design scene from their studio in Kennington. Innovative, sensual and emotional design, acclaimed the world over, Platt and Young think big, but also think about the detail.

Zauberflöte

Zauberflöte is Bjørn Wiinblad's favourite Mozart opera. Every piece in this shape depicts a different scene.

The rims on the plates are wider than ever before to fit in the depiction of the opera in relief and in great detail. The relief surfaces are not glazed but smoothed and polished after the second firing to produce the delecate matt finish that contrasts with the glaze of the rest of the piece.
